Abstract
Abstract
Background: Maternal diabetes is a risk factor for metabolic disorders and oxidative stress in both mothers and their offspring. This study aimed to investigate the effects of streptozotocin induced maternal diabetes on biochemical indices, asprosin levels, and oxidative stress in mother rats and their offspring.
Materials and Methods: In an experimental study, 24 rats, 12 male as control and 12 female rats, were divided into two groups: control and diabetic. After delivery, six 13-week-old male offspring were selected from each group (one from each female). Glucose levels, lipid profile, asprosin, and oxidative stress markers were measured in mothers and offspring and analyzed using independent t-tests and Pearson correlation.
Results: Diabetic mothers exhibited significantly higher levels of glucose, triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL-C, non-HDL-C, asprosin, and oxidative stress markers, including malondialdehyde, PAB, and FRAP, compared to controls (P < 0.05). In offspring, no significant differences in biochemical variables or oxidative stress were observed (P > 0.05). A strong correlation between asprosin and glucose (r = 0.94) and TG (r = 0.95) was significant only in diabetic mothers.
Conclusion: Maternal diabetes induces metabolic disturbances and elevates oxidative stress in mothers, but these effects are not evident in offspring. No association was found between asprosin concentrations and oxidative stress markers in offspring.
